The Park and
Recreation Department is located within the Municipal Services Building on 14th
Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. The Parks Superintendent is responsible for the City parks,
the Forestry Department and Farmers Market, in addition to holding the title of
Harbor Master.
There are approximately 187 acres of
land to maintain which consists of 14 parks, nine ball fields, six tennis courts,
two launching ramps, a skating rink, City waterfront walkways, waterweed
maintenance of the Bay of Sturgeon Bay, and two beaches all within the City of
Sturgeon Bay. The maintenance consists of pruning and hedge trimming of
greenery, planting flowers, cutting grass, bathroom maintenance, garbage and
recycling collection in all parks, playground equipment/bleacher maintenance and
general care taking of the City parks.
To better manage, the Aquatic Plant Harvesting Program has
hired Northern Environmental Technologies, Incorporated (Northern Environmental)
to complete an inventory of the Bay ecosystem; research potential management
alternatives; study, map, and survey the City's storm sewer system; and prepare
a comprehensive integrated long-term aquatic plant management (APM) plan. This
project is funded through a grant from the DNR and utilizes our cutting
operation as the local match and therefore does not utilize any additional
property tax dollars.
The goal of the project is to refine our operation to
continue to provide all of the relief from the extensive plant growth necessary
for navigation of boats in the bay without damaging the fragile fish habitat
that our waterways provide. This is a work in progress but all available
information can be viewed at the project web site,
www.northernenvironmental.com\sturgeonbay which will be updated regularly.
The Forestry Department is also
included in the Parks & Recreation Department. This includes enforcing the
City ordinance related to the planting, pruning, and cutting of trees in City
right of ways.
The Park and Recreation Superintendent
is also the City’s Harbor Master and is responsible for authorizing permits
for the 95 moorings in the Bay of Sturgeon Bay and the setting of regulatory
buoys in the Bay.
The City of Sturgeon Bay Farmers Market
is held from the last Saturday in June through October from 9:00 - 12:30.
The office hours of the Park &
Recreation Department are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and can
be reached by calling 920-746-2914 or through e-mail at parkandrec@sturgeonbaywi.org.
